Four-goal Akurang in running for FA cup award

Thurrock’s four goal marksman Cliff Akurang has been nominated for The FA’s prestigious FA Cup ‘Player of the Round’ award after his fourth qualifying round heroics.

Akurang’s four goals, including a five-minute hat-trick, were the highlight of Thurrock’s 6 – 0 victory over Spalding United, earning the club an FA Cup first round home tie against Oldham on Saturday, November 13.

Before then, Thurrock fans are being urged to voice their support for Akurang by voting in an on-line poll at www.TheFA.com

Fans have just seven days to register their support as votes must be cast by 9.00am on Monday, November 8.

Akurang is one five players short-listed for The FA Cup Player of the Round award, run in partnership with UMBRO. The others are Tiverton Town’s Kezie Ibe, Leigh RMI’s Karl Rose, Histon’s Lance Key and Halifax Town’s Craig Midgley.

Two national football correspondents nominated him for the award, Stuart Robertson of The Independent and Ricky George of The Daily Telegraph.

If Cliff wins, as well as being crowned ‘Player of the Round’, Akurang will win £1000 worth of UMBRO football kit and equipment for a local school, club or organisation of his choice. He will also receive an engraved silver salver.

Akurang would be the fourth player to join The FA’s Team of The FA Cup, guaranteeing VIP attendance at The FA Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday May 21, 2005 and an introduction to the crowd at half time.

The Team of The FA Cup will comprise Player of the Round winners from the First Qualifying round to the Semi Final. Last year’s team included five non-league players as well as Premiership stars Jose Antonio Reyes, Freddie Ljungberg and Bruno Cheyrou.

The other players guaranteed a place in this season’s Team of The FA Cup are Bishop’s Cleeve FC’s Kevin Slack, AFC Wimbledon’s Rob Ursell and Bath City’s Scott Partridge.

Sir Trevor Brooking, The FA’s Director of Football Development, said:  “The FA Cup always produces heroic performances that live long in the memory of fans. Cliff’s four goals at the weekend may not generate the same column inches as a semi-final winning goal, but his outstanding contribution to the competition is something that The FA is delighted to recognise.

“Cliff thoroughly deserves to be in the running for The FA Cup Player of the Round award. Now Thurrock fans have an opportunity to show their support, to try and help him win £1000 worth of UMBRO kit to boost grass roots football in the local community and book his VIP place at The FA Cup Final in eight months time.”

Fans who vote on TheFA.com before 4.00pm this Thursday, November 4, could win two tickets to a first round FA Cup match of their choice.
