Colin McBride was forced into a number of changes ahead of Thurrock’s
third away game in eight days with Ronnie Fletcher, Lee Hodges and Scott
Wallis coming in for the injured Carthy & Purdie as well as the
suspended Jimmy McFarlane.
With Richard Goddard taking the
captains at a Misty Warren the game started slowly as both teams probed
for an opening.
David Collis miss-controlled a
ball in midfield but recovered well before a two-footed Yeading
challenge saw him dumped to the floor. Collis took the resulting
free-kick only for it to be easily cleared.
In the 20th minute
Thurrock contrived to give Yeading a goal in the most bizarre of
circumstances.
Thurrock were awarded a free
kick which Glenn Knight, in goal, was getting ready to take when he was
encouraged to take the ball forward to where the offence occurred but
instead of picking the ball up and moving it he rolled the ball with his
foot. Manny Williams immediately picked up the ball, rounded Knight and
tapped the ball home from less than a yard. After much complaining by
the Thurrock players the referee awarded the goal.
Thurrock tried to settle down
after the goal and Lee Hodge controlled and played a lovely ball just
inside the full back which was just out of reached of the pacy Scott
Wallis.
Yeading were seeing more of the
ball now but Thurrock were always a threat on the break with Wallis’
pace and Harper leading the line well.
In the second half Thurrock
seemed to be much more up for the game, after strong words from Colin
McBride. Yeading had a couple of half chance that Knight held well in
goal.
Lee Hodges picked the ball up on
the left wing only to be unceremoniously brought down by Davis Haule who
received a yellow card from Referee - Alison Chapman – but then only
awarded a throw in.
Thurrock continued to push
forward with great effort and were almost rewarded in the 86th
minute when Gary Cross unleashed a drive only to be denied by a
magnificent save by Delroy Preddie in the Yeading goal. Thurrock came
back again and in the 89th minute David Collis, having
probably his best game of the season headed home a deserved equaliser.
All was not over, from the kick
off Yeading crossed from the right and Knight failed to deal with the
cross before a Yeading forward smashed the ball home. The delight was
cut short when, thru the mist, the linesmen flag was raised.
The final whistle went and
Thurrock celebrated a deserved point
