Thurrock Nick Police
For the second successive pre-season Thurrock took a trip to Met Police, and how different they were. Last season the game was played in baking sunshine and The Met Police matched Thurrock most of the way, this season the game was played in heavy showers and Thurrock were in control from start to finish. Steve Heffer dropped back into the defence along side Mark Goodfellow and Martin Carthy partnered Terry Bowes in the midfield. In the 10th minute a surge down the left from Forbes opened the Police defence, but unfortunately the cross did not match the run and the chance went begging. A Collis corner a minute later was powerfully met by Carthy but fell just wide of the post. As always Kris Lee and Craig O'Conner were willing runners in attack and were well supported by the powerful runs of Martin Carthy. It was the latter who missed the best opportunity of the match after 15 minutes, Carthy broke the offside trap to run clear but shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Thurrock then took the lead, Collis found found himself in space on the right and his near post cross was confidently tapped in from 8 yards. The lead was doubled nine minutes later when Martin Carthy broke up play in the Thurrock box, and made a gut busting run to tuck the ball pass home from 6 yards. The second half slowed down a little with Glen Knight coming on for Billy McMahon in the Thurrock goal and a number of other substitutions happening over the rest of the 45 minutes. Thurrock continued to look for more goals with Hodges shooting wide, but the Police defence held firm and Thurrock played out a comfortable two nil win.
