Thurrock were unlucky not to
end their winless run after an excellent performance away at Stortford.
They started well with Mark Janney finding Steve Harper, whose cross
just evaded Kris Lee six yards out from goal. With 20 minutes on the
clock Harper was unlucky when he rounded Young but his shot was cleared
off of the line by Tom Champion. After 25 minutes captain Jimmy
McFarlane had to go off due to a thigh injury and was replaced by Ronnie
Fletcher. Just minutes later Fletcher put Thurrock into the lead with a
thunderous header from an excellent Sam Sloma corner. After half an hour
the lead was nearly doubled when another excellent Sloma cross was just
missed in the middle by Lee. The equaliser for the hosts came moments
later when a cross by Alex Martin was flicked on by Dave Rainford and
brilliantly volleyed home by Steve Morrison. Moments later Rainford went
down in the box under a challenge from Glen Knight. However, the referee
was convinced that Rainford had dived and issued him with a yellow card.
The lack of argument from any Stortford player showed he had made the
right decision. Stortford did score minutes later though when Morrison
shot home from the edge of the box when it looked like he had nowhere to
go.
Thurrock
were inspired in the second half and Lee was really unlucky to see his
close range header come back of the underside of the bar with Young well
beaten. The equaliser came as Thurrock continued to be the better side.
Sloma passed into the box and the Stortford defence made a mess and the
ball ran to Harper to tap in from close range. Thurrock continued to be
the dominant side but the only chance that came to win the game was a
Richard Pacquette header from Lee’s cross that was comfortably held by
Young.
