Thurrock 0 - 1 Cambridge City
Simpson 3

A disciplined display by Cambridge City enabled them to leave Ship Lane with three points. They broke the deadlock as early as the 3rd minute when Simpson’s strong running turned the Fleet defence and he shot low past McMahon from the edge of the box. Fleet immediately put the pressure on and Lee Hodges was unlucky to see his 40 yard shot clip the post and go wide. By the 20th minute Fleet had enough chances to level the game & take the lead. Cliff Akurang’s header was well saved low down after a Collis cross. Collis’ free kick was also well parried by the keeper. Akurang was unlucky from the resulting corner when his half volley was tipped over and Goddard’s volley from the edge of the box was cleared off the line from the next. Cambridge held on till half time through good defending.

Cambridge also defended cleverly in the second half, although Fleet were unlucky with two strong penalty claims, one for a foul on Kandol by the keeper and one for handball. Kandol also headed over after Hodges’ cross had deceived the keeper.
