KANDOL BLOWS OUT WEYMOUTH’S LIGHTS Click on photo for larger image, All photo's copyright of Thurrock FC
Thurrock earned a well deserved victory over struggling Weymouth at Ship Lane. Quickly out of the blocks, Thurrock were unlucky not to take the lead after a succession of corners early on forced Weymouth into desperate defending. One of the corners saw Tresor Kandol’s header tipped wide at full stretch by Jason Matthews. Weymouth were keeping possession well but seemed unable to penetrate the strong Thurrock defensive line. Kandol was unlucky again after 23 minutes when he headed just wide from Dave Collis’ free kick. The Thurrock goal was, however, inevitable. Collis played a long ball to Kandol who sidestepped two defenders before shooting past Matthews. Kandol nearly double the lead on the stroke of half time but Chukki Eribenne’s outstretched leg diverted the ball behind. 1-0 became 2-0 four minutes into the second
half when a Collis free kick found Kandol with the freedom of the Hotel Ground
to power a header past Matthews. The Weymouth defence had just stood and
watched. Weymouth grabbed an undeserved goal with fifteen minutes left to play.
Jimmy McFarlane’s wayward header fell to Lee Philpott who drilled left footed
past Billy McMahon. Having dominated for so long it would have been harsh on
Thurrock had Weymouth gone back to the Wessex with a point, but that nearly
happened when Eribenne’s far post header came back of the post with McMahon
well beaten. Thurrock held on for three vital points in the play off push. |
