The game started slowly with neither side willing to take the game to the other team, other than a couple of strong runs by Kris Lee witch usually ended with him being out numbered by a well marshalled St Albans defence. St Albans made the first impression, when after a fine, flowing move Walsh scored left footed from 10 yards out. Simon Martin made a great run in behind the Saints defence only to be hauled down by a desperate defender. Glenn Poole stood up to take the resultant penalty but hit it far too close to Paul Bastock in the St Albans goal, and he made a comfortable save. The weather took over in the second half with driving rain, hail and god knows what else battering Ship Lane. It was during this storm that both the other goals were scored a left wing free kick, taken by Glenn Poole, was headed home by Jimmy Macfarlane and Walsh grabbed his second on the game smashing home a free kick from 25 yards low to Andy Woodman’s right. Thurrock probed and push but despite coming close on a couple of occasions could find a way through. In the 87th minute Bastock spilled the ball and Goddard rightly challenged the goalkeeper, the keeper seemed to take offence to this and seemed to swing a punch, however the referee only booked Goddard as he was limping from the pitch.
