Fleet moved back up the table with a good victory against high flying Lewes. With Billy McMahon struggling with a back injury George Sealey was in goal for his first Thurrock league game. Thurrock started well with the wind at their backs and Adam Parker was unlucky when his shot was deflected wide in the 12th minute. Lewes started to come back into the game and Sealey pulled off a good save from a long range Barrington Belgrave effort. Halfway through the half Lewes should have taken the lead but Craig Dobson missed a gilt edged chance. Tresor Kandol was unlucky on the half hour when his header went just over the bar with Scott Ward struggling to get to the ball. Parker was then booked for dissent with five minutes left of the half. Just as halftime appeared to be coming with no goals on the board Thurrock upped their game. Glenn Poole was put through by Steve Heffer and his shot was well saved. The rebound came out to Cliff Akurang, back on his best position of right wing, who beat the defender and crossed. Kandol’s header came off the bar and keeper before he tapped into the open goal. Poole nearly scored a goal of the season contender a minute later as he hit a 40 yard volley just wide. It looked as if the second half would be a tough affair as Lewes now had the strong wind at their backs, but in truth Thurrock never really looked like letting a goal in in the second half. Poole was unlucky on the hour when his volley went just wide and with twenty minute to go Kandol was put through by Mark Goodfellow’s through ball, however, the angle was tight and the shot went just wide. With just over ten minutes to go Thurrock secured the three points. Good work by Parker left Kandol with the simplest of tasks to tap home from a yard out. Thurrock played out the last ten minutes to earn their three points.
