THURROCK ROBBED
BY THE MET
Thurrock let a two goal lead slip today in the last ten minutes in an otherwise good display. Met Police nearly took the lead after only 45 seconds when Goths was beaten to a corner, only for the header to go over the bar. Thurrock controlled the rest of the half, with Jimmy McFarlane scoring a 20 yard volley after a headed clearance didn't go far enough on 11 minutes. The only other chances of the half were a definite penalty not given for a tug on Simon Martin and a Kris Lee header which was deflected wide. Thurrock came very quickly out of the box in the second half with Cliff Akurang's trickery causing big problems. One minute into the half he turned a defender inside out but failed to shoot when the opportunity arose. Two minutes later he did score. Great work from new signing Richard Goddard in the box led to an excellent crossing opportunity, and when the delivery came in Akurang dispatched his header against the post and in. Fifteen minutes later the impressive Goddard smashed a shot against the bar on the volley, the ball being tipped there by the Met's keeper. Thurrock were in control and Dave Collis was unlucky not to add a third after a long range effort which was well turned over the bar. The Met, however were not going to let Thurrock leave with a win and were unlucky when a goal was disallowed with 15 minutes to go. With 9 minutes left they did pull a goal back. A well drilled low shot went under the body of reserve keeper Billy McMahon. Thurrock pushed for a chance to re-establish their two goal advantage and in the 83rd minute had goal very harshly disallowed for offside. With a minute to go Marc Goodfellow was unlucky to head into his own goal after a long throw and Thurrock had to settle for the draw.
A good performance by
the Fleet, especially considering top goal scorer TK was not playing. |
