Classy Thurrock were in determined mood to record their first win of the new campaign. After the unbelievable refereeing blunder, which cost us three points in the Carshalton game, the lads worked hard from the first whistle until the last. With only two minutes gone Terry Bowes found his way into the box and appeared to be fouled but the referee waved away the appeals. Despite the visitors height advantage in the midfield area Paul Linger and Steve Heffer worked hard and created a steady flow of opportunities for the Fleet strikers. The best of these moves came after 18 minutes when a Linger pass through to Kandol saw the striker round three defenders with some neat footwork only to fire wide of the mark..
Ten minutes later the home side were ahead after forcing a corner. The corner was retaken after some off the ball jostling. The resultant corner taken by the outstanding Dave Collis was only half cleared and Terry Bowes rushed in to hit a thunderous shot which Hendon keeper King did well to parry but the ball fell to Cliff Akurang who smashed the ball back past him to give Thurrock a deserved lead.
Jeran Meah hit a shot, which, had it gone in would have won any goal of the season contest! The Fleet man struck a shot from just inside the Hendon half that the Hendon keeper was glad to see go wide of his far post.
Hendon worked hard to try and gain some control of the game but were limited to only a few half chances that never really caused Fleet’s Paul Gothard any real problems.
No sooner had the second half began when Paul Linger rifled a shot inches wide of the upright to keep the home side in the driving seat.
Hendon just couldn’t find a way past the Fleet defence which, was excellently marshaled by John Purdie, and never really threatened in the second half. Tresor Kandol nearly provided a gilt edged opportunity for Akurang when he got round the back of the Hendon defence but the Fleet man’s final ball was cleared much to the visitors relief.
As the final seconds ticked down Kandol himself scored the second goal to give Fleet the points. Substitute Kris Lee sent a looping cross over to the far post where Kandol was on hand with a great finish to seal the win for a deserved victory.
