THURROCK RETAIN THE HARRY CAIN CUP

THURROCK 2 – 1 EAST THURROCK UNITED

There could not have been a more fitting game of football played in the memory of The Rocks late chairman Harry Cain.  Both sides put on a show for the decent sized crowd on what was yet another warm balmy evening.

Despite the humid conditions the pace of the game was fast and furious for most of the first half, which gave the players another stiff workout.

Chances were few and far between despite some good approach play but both defences stood firm and made the attackers work hard for every chance.

It was hardly a surprise that things were level at the break. However, after just 5 minutes of the second half Steve Heffer was on hand to fire Fleet into the lead. After 66 minutes Tresor Kandol scored a second for Fleet, which was to prove a match winner as The Rocks scored late on to set up an exciting finish.

Many of the supporters of both sides felt that it should be a good season for both teams on the evidence of this game.

The most important thing was to continue the memory of Harry Cain and it was fitting that his son – Derek (centre) can be seen here with Fleet skipper – John Purdie with the Cup at the end of the match.
