Purfleet 1 - 0 Maidenhead United WAYNE SCORES ON MAIDEN VOYAGE FOR FLEET With temperatures more suited to the leisurely pace of Cricket the players of both teams played the game at a good pace throughout the course of this opening day clash. The visitors bought the best out of Fleet keeper Alex O'Reilly in the early exchanges but all in all there were little clear openings created in front of either goal as both defences stood firm. Fleet midfielder Terry Bowes found himself clear through and appeared to be bundled over inside the United penalty area but referee Pryor waved away the appeals much to the amazement of spectators. The first goal scored in the league at The Hotel would have graced any ground in any League. The ever reliable Martyn Lawrence sent Mark Goodfellow away down Fleet's right flank, his well placed cross was met with the deftest of headers by Wayne Vaughan to head low into the left hand corner giving United's keeper no chance. The second half began brightly with the visitors looking to level things and they will possibly feel that they should have done so. As the heat intensified the pace slowed but to be fair all 22 players worked hard for their teams. In the end Fleet possibly shaded things and the Wayne Vaughan header turned out in the end to be enough to secure the three points. O'Reilly, Pashley, Southon, Chandler, McFarlane, Jones, Goodfellow, Simpson, Vaughan, Bowes Lawrence. Subs used. Akurang, Georgiou, Allen. Subs not used. Smith, Gould.
