Purfleet 1 Basingstoke Town 0

LINGER GRABS WINNER

Fleet looked to be in determined mood from the start. The early chances fell to the home side, with Terry Bowes coming the closest when he beat the last defender to run along the by-line and was only thwarted by Tarr in the Town goal
Fleet's defence kept Towns efforts to mostly long range, but they were kept on their toes by the livley Neville Roach.
Fleet struck in the 20th minute after a mazy run by Cliff Akurang forced a saved from Tarr who parried the ball out the Paul Linger, who fired home what turned out to be the winning goal.

Town Tom Foster should have equalised but for the acrobatics of O'Reilly in the Purfleet goal.

Town enjoyed their best spell in the opening 15 minutes of the second half but found it difficult to break down the Purfleet rear guard which was marshalled buy the ever reliable John Purdie. Fleet pressed hard for the second goal and finished the stronger side, town almost got a share of the points but again Alex O'Reilly denied them.
